Renewing your road tax and buying car insurance can be a hassle, especially if you need to take time off to check your outstanding summonses before heading to the Road Transport Department to do the necessary.
Thankfully, there is now an easier option. You can pay your summonses, renew your road tax and also buy car insurance using a credit card or via direct debit via the Internet at any hour of the day or week. All you have to do is to log on to www.myeg.com.my and your queuing up days will be behind you, for a nominal charge of RM2.75 (called a convenience charge).
MyEG Services Berhad is a concessionaire for the Malaysian E-Government MSC Flagship application. MyEG offers the public a single point of contact between the government and the public through their portal. The services they provide including renewing road tax, car insurance, paying summonses, Kuala Lumpur City hall assessment and even some utility bill payments.
MyEG was officially launched on April 17 and to date, has over 2,000 users, with 10 times the number logging in to enquire about the services.
Actress Maya Karin, who is the spokesman for MyEG, swears by it. "I think it is a good idea. Nowadays we try to make everything fast and simple," she said during a recent interview. Maya is used to doing her banking via the Internet and was only recently introduced to MyEG.
"It is especially good for me as a single woman. I can just do it from my home and not stress myself out by going to the RTD."
In the past, she engaged the services of agents to get the job done but found it a hassle to call them up constantly to get her road tax and insurance renewed.
Now, all she does is fill up her particulars online for road tax and car insurance renewal on MyEG, and her new road tax and insurance cover note is sent to her via courier service about a week later.
Delivery time can change as the recipient will be first contacted to see when it would be convenient for him or her to receive the documents. There is a an additional charge for this service (between RM6 to RM10, depending on location) but it is still more convenient (maybe even cheaper) than actually doing it yourself.
Maya, like many urbanites with a career, is a busy person. Fresh off the success of her movie Duyung, she is currently in the process of producing her own series which focuses on environmental issues.
According to Raja Munir Shah Raja Mustapha (pix), the executive director of My E.G. Services Berhad, Maya was picked as their spokesman because they are aiming for the younger generation who are computer savvy.
"Maya is the right person to reach out to the audience," Raja Munir said.
"It didn’t take us long to convince Maya; she saw the convenience of using this service," he added.
This service is also useful for the disabled and the elderly as many public departments are equipped to meet their needs.
