Gerakan: Put up road signs immediately
PENANG (Jan 16, 2009):  Penang Gerakan wants the state government to immediately put up multi-lingual road signs in Georgetown, especially at the heritage enclave which has received Unesco World Heritage listing.

Its liaison committee chairman, Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan, said the party was ready to assist and facilitate the process of implementation for the benefit of the country.

"The richness of our culture is a very valuable and unique asset of our country which all Malaysians, including our leaders, should feel proud of," he said in a statement today.

In a related matter, he said the party was relieved to learn that Pahang accountant Nik Rizman Sapian had filed a notice to discontinue the suit against the Penang Government and the Penang Municipal Council, with regard to the putting up of multi-lingual road signs in Penang.

On Nov 4, last year, Nik Rizman filed an injunction at the High Court here to stop the state government and the council from putting up multi-lingual road signs.

He had claimed that the move to put up multi-lingual road signs would jeopardise the position of Bahasa Malaysia as the country's national language. -- Bernama
