For a low profile personality like Christy Yow, the 22-year-old Malaysian model feels that she has been gaining far too much attention in recent months considering that she is still quite new in the entertainment industry. Yow never thought that her simple photo shoot for the December issue of FHM Singapore magazine became the talk of the town.
It was not just because of the magazine’s sexy pictures which made heads turn whenever Yow passes by, but she seems to stand out, whether in magazines or real life. Compared to her previous image in previous print advertisements, the Ipoh-born girl now has a boyish hairstyle which complements her height, bubbly personality and curvy silhouette.
Whether she is in Singapore or Malaysia, it is hard not to stare at the "once a complete nobody" who has turned into a well groomed model. During a recent interview, she was wearing a red jersey dress with matching red platforms. Standing at 1.68m, she was naturally outstanding even among the white background of the restaurant where the interview was held.
Yow started modelling part-time when she was 19 although it was not a career path she initially intended to pursue. Since then, she has appeared on the covers and lifestyle sections of regional magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue in Korea and Taiwan.
What made you take up modelling?
Some of my friends asked me if I would be interested to do modelling. So I thought, ‘why not?’. After all, I didn’t have classes every day and I had time to learn a few new things. But I honestly never thought I would end up being a full-time model.
Now, I’m even attached full-time with the Singaporean label, Crocodile, and had recently signed a contract to be their official spokesperson after modelling part-time for the label for several years.
Would you say that you are a ‘somebody’ today?
Considering that the whole of Singapore knows me as ‘36C Christy’, I think I have obviously made an impression. Whether it will be positive in some eyes, or negative in others, all the Singaporean tabloids and even radio stations know me as that. It may have caused unnecessary attention, but in some ways I think it created awareness to the people around me, telling them that the covergirl on the December FHM Singapore is not an unknown girl, but is actually Crocodile’s spokesperson.
Were you aware of what the FHM Singapore photo shoot was all about?
Honestly, I really had no idea that the FHM shoot would portray the sexy side of me. I read mostly women’s magazines and I only had a rough idea of what FHM is all about. I did a radio interview and they asked me about my cover shot with FHM, whether I usually dress that way? I told them that I never dress that way at all (wearing just a two-piece bikini).
How are you adapting to the lifestyle in Singapore?
Singapore is very ‘free and easy’ compared to Kuala Lumpur. Most of the time, I’ll walk to where I want to go and transportation is easily available.
Besides modelling, what else would you like to do?
I never thought I could sing. I remember auditioning through the phone, singing for George Leung, a music producer in Singapore. Till today, I can’t believe that I actually impressed him! It was a rewarding experience as I recently had the opportunity to sing a duet with Hagen Tan. It’s the theme song (Our Love) for the film, The Wedding Game (2009) which stars Fann Wong and Christopher Lee.
If you hadn’t become a model, what would you be?
A personal assistant in a 9 to 5 job (she laughs).
What are your plans for 2009?
Now that I’ve discovered singing, I want to really take that into consideration and hopefully one day, I’d be able to come out with my own album. At the moment, I’m looking for the right vocal trainer to help me improve my singing. However, it won’t be an immediate jump into a singing career as I still have dreams to see more of the modelling world. I may also be starring in a few films.
