The installation held at Istana Besar Seri Menanti, followed customs rooting from west Sumatra which date back more than 700 years.
The installaation which was the highlight of a week-long ceremony, was last seen more than 40 years ago when Tuanku Muhriz's predecessor, Tuanku Ja'afar Tuanku Abdul Rahman was installed as the state'e 10th ruler.
Witnessing the ceremony were the Regent of Perlis, the Raja Muda of Johor, the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, the crown prince of Brunei, the Yang Di-Pertua Negeri of Malacca, the Governor of West Sumatra, and other dignitaries.
Also those present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and Culture, Arts and Information Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim and other dignitaries.
The ceremony started with the inspection of a guard of honour by Tuanku Muhriz before he proceeded to the Balairong Seri (throne room) at 10.30am with his consort Tunku Ampuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Aishah Rohani Tengku Besar Mahmud.
As soon as they were seated in the throne room, the Datuk Bentara Kanan Ismail Ujang sought permission to begin the ceremony and called on the Undang of Sungai Ujong, Datuk Mubarak Dohak to proclaim the installation.
Following the proclaimation by the Undang, the Datuk Bentara Kanan announced to all present that the proclamation has been made, and called out "Daulat Tuanku" three times, and this was was repeated by those present in the throne room.
The Negeri Sembilan anthem was then played to a 32-gun salute.
The "paying of homage ceremony" to the new Yang di-Pertuan Besar then begun with the four Undangs of Sungai Ujong (Mubarak), Jelebu (Datuk Musa Wahab), Johol (Mohd Jan Abdul Ghani), and Rembau (Muhamad Sharip Othman) followed by Syahbandar of Sungai Ujong (Datuk Shaari Hassan) and other important members of the "nine states" in Negri Sembilan.
Following the paying of homage ceremony which took about a half hour, the Mentri Besar of Negri Sembilan Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan read out a congratulatory statement on behalf of the state government and the people.
Tuanku Muhriz then delivered his royal address following which prayers were recited by the state mufti.
The ceremony was concluded by Datuk Seri Amar Diraja follwoing which dignitaries and guests joined Tuanku Muhriz and Tuanku Aishah Rohani for a royal luncheon.
In the unique tradition of Negri Sembilan, the Yang Dipertuan Besar is elected by the "Undang" or territorial chiefs of Jelebu, Johol, Rembau and Sungai Ujong.
Tunku Muhriz had been proclaimed the Yang Dipertuan Besar on Dec 29 last year, two days after the death of Tuanku Ja'afar, his uncle.
He was the only son of the state's ninth ruler, Tuanku Munawir Tuanku Abdul Rahman, but had been considered too young to be the ruler when his father passed away due to an illness in 1967.
On Wednesday, the returning of the royal regalia ceremony will conclude the week-long installation proceedings.
