SHAH ALAM (Nov 3, 2009) :
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission went on a prosecution blitz today, slapping graft charges on six people including a member of Parliament, a former assemblyman and political aides.

The court complex saw groups of politicians from Umno and DAP gathering to show support for those charged, mainly for false claims and deception. The "action" started before noon and ended past 3pm in two Sessions Courts here.

Umno's Sabak Bernam MP Abd Rahman Bakri, 44, was charged with eight counts of graft which were allegedly committed when he was the Selangor assemblyman for Sungai Air Tawar early last year. He pleaded not guilty.

He was charged with submitting RM80,000 in false claims for events between Jan 21 and Feb 12 last year, which allegedly never took place.

The alleged false claims include prizes and souvenirs for outstanding students, the People Friendly programmes, Maulidur Rasul programmes and a Kemas family day.

Judge Syafeera Mohd Said set bail at RM 30,000 with one surety and fixed Dec 14 for mention.

Abd Rahman's fellow parliamentarians who turned up to give him moral support included former Puteri chief Datuk Noraini Ahmad (Parit Sulong).

Later, in another court, an aide of Abdul Rahman, Mohd Rosli Bushra, was charged with abetting his superior on the same eight charges. He also pleaded not guilty.

Judge Mat Ghani Abdullah set bail at RM9,000 and fixed April 26 to May 7 next year for trial.

The others in the net:

> Former Gerakan assemblyman for Teratai Yap Soo Sun, 43.

He was charged with seven counts of graft, to which he pleaded not guilty.

Yap, who is presently unemployed, was charged with seven offences under Section 11 (c) of the Anti-Corruption Act 1997 for allegedly filing false claims for non-existent "Mesra Rakyat" functions linked to the Thaipusam and Chinese New Year festivals.

He was charged with making the claims on March 10 last year at the Hulu Langat district office with an aide, Firdaus Abu Zarin by filing false invoices.

Judge Mat Ghani Abdullah fixed bail at RM25,000 and fixed Dec 14 for mention.

> Yap's aide, Firdaus Abu Zarin, 41. He was charged separately with abetting him in the seven charges.

> Special assistant to Pandamaran assemblyman Ronnie Liew, Wong Chuan How.

He was charged with one count of criminal breach of trust and one count of sending a false invoice. He claimed trial to both charges.

Wong, who is also a Sepang municipal councillor, was alleged to have filed a false claim of RM2,500 through a forged invoice for car flags to the Sepang Municipal Council, and for misappropriating a RM5,000 cheque which was entrusted to him.

The court fixed bail at RM5,000 and set March 29 to April 2 for the case to be heard.

> Mohd Yahya Mat Sahri, a former assistant to Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.

He was alleged to have misled Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Bhd president Datuk Abd Karim Munisar into giving him a RM50,000 contribution to a Pakatan celebration of their first 100 days as the Selangor government.

Mohd Yahya also pleaded not guilty to another charge of using a false Selangor Parti Keadilan Rakyat resolution to open a Maybank account in 2008.

The court fixed bail at RM10,000 and set the trial from April 19 to 23.
