Ong sacks four MCA CC 'dissidents'

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 3, 2009):
Four MCA president-appointed central committee (CC) members who opposed the Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat-Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek's Greater Unity Plan (GUP) were sacked today.

The four, all aligned to the CC-appointed deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, are organising secretary Yoo Wei How, Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung, Datuk Chai Kim Sen and Gan Hong Su.

In place, Ong has appointed Chua's son and Labis MP Tee Yong, Petaling Jaya Selatan MCA chief Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai and former Perak assemblyman Tan Chin Meng as CC members.

At the moment, Liow's position as deputy president is also in doubt as the Registrar of Societies had informed the party, via a letter this morning, that Chua is still the legitimate deputy president after the outcome of the Oct 10 extraordinary general meeting (EGM).

The 2,307 delegates to the EGM had passed a motion of no confidence against Ong with a 14-vote majority while rejecting Chua as deputy president with a 74-vote majority.

The party constitution states that elected central leaders can only be removed from office in an EGM by three quarters of the central delegates.

In a press conference, Chor said they received termination letters for unknown reasons in the morning when they were preparing to attend the 1pm CC meeting.

"He (Ong) has appointed three new members to fill the vacancy. On one hand, he (Ong) talks about unity, on the other hand, he is getting rid of those who oppose his views.

"We feel it's revenge for supporting the requisitioning of another EGM. We are only sacked because we are appointed CC members," said Chor.

"The well being of the party is of paramount importance. Position in the party is secondary to all of us.

"I got the most to lose as I was an appointed CC member and I am also a deputy finance minister. But for the good and image of the party, I had no choice even," he said.

Chor said Ong had not shed his lone ranger style since he was a youth leader and "he still acts unilaterally without much consultation".

He said the best way to resolve the crisis was through fresh elections as who ever wins in the election must be given the mandate to lead.

On Thursday, 16 CC members requisitioned for an EGM to call for fresh CC elections to end the leadership crisis.

After the 10/10 EGM, several CC members tried to force Ong to quit but Ong invoked his presidential powers to call for another EGM to let the central delegates decide whether they wanted to hold fresh elections to elect their central leaders.

Soon after, Ong and Chua agreed to set aside their past and differences with a the GUP which was endorsed by Barisan Nasional chairman and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.
