Variety of genres for European Union Film Festival

an Oscar this year.

Presented
by the Swedish Embassy, this year’s edition of the European Union Film Festival will offer viewers a chance to catch dramas, thrillers, documentaries and children’s adventure movies.

There are even Academy Award and Golden Globe nominees thrown into the mix.

Sweden, as the current holder of the Presidency of the European Union, is organising this event in cooperation with the Delegation of the European Commission to Malaysia.

One of the movies screened at the festival is the Golden Globe nominee Everlasting Moments. This Swedish production tells the story of a young working class woman who wins a camera at a lottery. The decision to keep it then alters her life.

The Polish film Katyn (nominated for an Academy Award for best foreign language film in 2009) is a powerful historical drama about the execution of Polish officers by Soviet authorities in the Katyn forest during World War II.

Other award winning films screened at the festival are Czech Republic’s Night Owls (winners of best actor and best actress awards at the International Film Festival in Karlovy Varay) and Cherry Blossom (winner of Bavarian Film Award 2007, German Film Award 2008, and Best Film Golden Space Needle Award Seattle 2008).

This is the 10th European Union Film Festival and it is presented by the Swedish Embassy with Golden Screen Cinemas. Nineteen films from 15 countries will be screened from Nov 12 to 22.

More information about the films screened and the screening schedule can be found on the European Union Film Festival website at www.euff2009.com

The films will be screened at GSC Mid-Valley Megamall, GSC 1 Utama and GSC Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. Tickets are priced at RM5, except for In the Boundless City which will be free of charge. Tickets holders are entitled to one free spin to win prizes at the European Union Film Festival Lucky Draw. Tickets can be purchased at the screening locations or online at the GSC website at www.gsc.com.my. Tickets for In the Boundless City can only be redeemed on the same day of the screening.

All movies will be screened in their original languages with English subtitles.

Lucky Draw sessions will be held during the opening ceremony on Nov 11 and on Nov 14 and Nov 15 at GSC Pavilion; and on Nov 21 and Nov 22 at GSC Mid-Valley. There are over RM30,000 worth of prizes up for grabs. Among them are hotel stay vouchers and Pangkor holiday weekend vouchers.
