Selangor to bare all on projects benefiting cronies
by Maria J.Dass

Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim
SHAH ALAM (Nov 10, 2009):
Selangor will release information on several projects that were designed to benefit the state, but ended up benefiting certain companies instead.

Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said the state government has initiated efforts to declassify information which had previously been classified as Official Secrets by the previous state administration.

“In accordance to Section 2 (c) of the Official Secrets Act (OSA), I have initiated efforts towards this although the Freedom of Information Enactment will be tabled at the next Selangor state legislative assembly meeting in March,” he told the State Assembly during his budget speech.

“These reports will be released at the state legislative assembly meeting and will expose the real story behind the projects initiated by the previous Barisan Nasional administration which benefited certain companies including re-forestation projects for commercial purposes and two abandoned projects – one in Bukit Botak and the other in Bukit Cerakah,” said Abdul Khalid.

The tabling of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), he said, was towards introducing a more transparent environment for investors and businessmen in the state.

“This transparency will be a state policy except when there is proof that the information can affect the security of the state,” Abdul Khalid said.

At a press conference later Abdul Khalid said the purpose of releasing the information using the allowance under the OSA and efforts to introduce the FOIA is to make people more cautious and accountable.

“It is not a witch hunt but a means to show that people cannot hide behind a government Act and should be more careful and accountable. In addition, we also aim to reduce incidence of abuse and misuse of funds,” he said.

Abdul Khalid denied that it was a crackdown on the opposition in Selangor.

“It is a crackdown on everybody; If there happens to be a Barisan Nasional member involved, then well and good for Pakatan Rakyat,” he said.
