PKR reps greet 'independent' Badrul with sarcasm

Badrul Hisham Abdullah

SHAH ALAM (Nov 17, 2009) :
Port Klang assemblyman Badrul Hisham Abdullah’s attempt to pose a question during the Q&A session at the Selangor state assembly today on the progress of the wireless broadband service in Port Klang was greeted with sarcasm from his former party colleagues.

“I’m surprised to see Port Klang here,” said Rodziah Ismail, the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) state executive councilor for welfare, women’s affairs, science and technology and culture before she begun answering the question.

She then told the state assembly that the Hybrid Wireless Infrastructure Network (HyWIN) for the areas within the Klang Municipal Council including Port Klang was still under the Phase II and III planning stage.

“Implementation will begin in early or mid 2011,” she said, adding that the service for Port Klang should be up and running by 2012.

She said the project for the entire state was scheduled to be completed by 2014 and that the state was negotiating with Redtone and Packet One while local authorities have been asked to prepare suitable sites for the project.

Badrul Hisham then stood up and said: “Thank you, YB Rodziah. I have a supplementary question: “Port Klang should be given priority because of its contribution and I hope the executive councilor concerned will give it importance.”

Deputy Speaker Haniza Talha then ticked off the newly-independent rep and gave him a lesson on state assembly procedures by telling him: “When you are addressing someone in the assembly you should refer to them by their constituency and not their name.”

Rodziah, who is also Batu Tiga assemblyman, responded by saying: “Isn’t it surprising that finally after 20 months you have decided to speak up for Port Klang and make this request.”

She then went on to say that she would not reply to that question as it did not have any relevance to the original question posed.

In late October, Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim had asked Badrul Hisham to resign because of non-performance in his constituency.

However, hours after Abdul Khalid called for his resignation, the assemblyman quit PKR, citing a loss of faith in the party leadership and unhappiness over financial allocations.

Badrul Hisham said he would now be a Barisan Nasional (BN)-friendly independent lawmaker and has, accordingly, been given a seat just behind BN backbenchers in the state legislative assembly.
