Adhere to party constitution, says Tee Keat

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 29, 2009): Embattled MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said to keep MCA’s democracy, all parties must adhere to practices and decisions made by the majority, especially within the Central Committee (CC).

"Don’t tell me that the majority has to bow to the wishes of certain quarters? That’s not the way we manage the party," he said after officiating a Hari Raya AidilAdha lunch in his Pandan constituency.

He also said that any and all parties wanting to make suggestions such as meetings and fresh polls, need to adhere to party constitutions.

"It doesn’t matter who makes the suggestion, they still need to follow party constitutions, including me as party president. If fresh polls are to be carried out, there must be CC members who are willing to give up their seats, up to two thirds need to resign," said Ong.

"The MCA AGM will be held on Dec 5 in accordance to party constitution. Any views or opinions to postpone it needs to be referred to CC."

On Declaration 1128 made by vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai’s faction, Ong said all declarations must be done the right way, in accordance to party constitutions.

"Anyone can make declarations, but do it the right way… whatever you want to do, follow the rules as stated in the constitution," he said.

"If we continue to entertain these types of declarations, then all quarters will make all sorts of declarations."

On deciding a new date for fresh elections, Ong said two issues need to be addressed.

"The first is whether the fresh polls will cover the Youth and Wanita wings," he said.

"The second is whether the elections will follow the current system or a new model which is closer to UMNO’s model. That’s what the grassroots are asking."

On certain quarters who feel that there is no need to involve Youth and Wanita wings, Ong said "individuals can make lots of claims" and that they "say whatever benefits them" but there is a need to follow what is felt by the grassroots.

To a question on when he would meet Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muyhiddin Yassin to discuss a solution to the MCA power struggle, Ong said whether they meet or not, the most important thing was communication and that he had been in communication with Muhyiddin.

He also denied rumours that he was in London to negotiate a defection to PKR. He blamed the "baseless slander" on unidentified quarters linked to the PKFZ project.

"There are many who have the motive to destroy my political career but for the sake of truth, I will not budge," said Ong.

He said the recovery of public funds in relation to the scandal-hit Port Klang Free Zone project has been at the top of his agenda.

"My duty is not over, because when we investigate we won’t just report the results but we’ll take action immediately to return the rakyat’s money, which amounts to more than RM1.64 billion," he said.

Ong also announced at the lunch that RM1.5 million in federal funds has been approved to improve the district’s infrastructure. He also distributed RM100 each to the needy and elderly in the district.
