A PIECE of the Big Apple is coming to town tomorrow as electro-rock band The Rapture gets set to headline the Heineken Green Room event at KL Live, starting from 9pm.
The New York-based band, whose single House of Jealous Lovers became one of the defining tracks for a generation of underground music lovers, will take to the stage armed with a fistful of new songs from its yet-to-be-released sophomore album.
"We’re not putting the record out until we’ve chosen a record label," said Gabriel Andruzzi, The Rapture’s songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.
"It’s very possible that it will be out this fall. I really want the world to hear it. But we’ll be playing some of the new songs in Malaysia.
"Music is in my life every day in a very important way. When I was younger, it really was my identity, it was everything about who I was. I learned everything through music."
Other acts that have been lined up for tomorrow night’s event include mysterious electro producer and Boysnoize pile driver D.I.M.
Meanwhile, from the local scene, LapSap will debut its LitterAll live show. The act is a culmination of the colourful duo’s efforts to set a new benchmark for DJs and producers. Party goers can expect to witness an explosion of lights and sounds on stage – creating a memorable multi-sensory experience.
There will also be a one-off collaboration between Balearic electronica-heads Tenderfist and Malaysia’s own day-glo Kelis, rapper Arabyrd.
One of the elements that have long put Heineken’s music events at the heart of Malaysia’s music scene is its ability to deliver unexpected surprises and spontaneous twists.
This year, celebrity snapper and Dim Mak hellraiser The Cobrasnake will be adding his own twist of photographic mayhem to the Green Room stew.
While The Rapture, super-producer D.I.M. and the rest of the line-up generate the electricity onstage to fire up the atmosphere, Dim Mak will be capturing the excitement on the dance floor.
"Heineken Green Room has developed a reputation for providing stunning, new musical experiences," says Jasmine Foong, Heineken senior brand manager.
"An act like The Rapture brings together the roots and the future of the electro scene while DJs like D.I.M. show what a vital force dance music has become.
"Most importantly, for our music fans and consumers, shows like LitterAll and Tenderfist’s collaboration with Arabyrd demonstrate the quality and potential of local talent," she added.
Meanwhile, Heineken Green Room also took to the streets of Kuala Lumpur to promote tomorrow’s event.
To celebrate the arrival of The Rapture, it has taken some of the band’s Do It Yourself (DIY) ethics and translated them into a series of guerrilla art installations around the capital.
"Our photography, music, sculpture and fashion projects have captured the imagination of a new generation of music fans with multiple, eclectic tastes," said Foong.
Enthuses Andruzzi: "We grew up in a period when there was a big DIY scene, the post-punk scene, the post-hardcore-scene. People made fanzines and mixtapes.
"When cultural media are used in that mode of being creative and putting something out there that’s honest, then that’s something we appreciate," he said.
Channelling that spirit and energy, design house Bombshelter Studios have created State of Rapture, a series of collectible music figures – each around 10cm high – and placed them in certain outlets and outdoor locations.
Tickets priced at RM48 are available for Heineken members. For more information, log on to www.greenroom.com.my.
