Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob | BERA (July 31, 2010): Twenty food items will be placed under the price control scheme during the fasting month of Ramadan and Aidilfitri celebration.
Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said they include cooking oil, chicken, beef, egg, flour and sugar.
"The list of items will be announced next week," he told reporters after launching Teachers' Day 2010 celebration at Kompleks Rakan Muda here today.
Over 2,000 enforcement officers from the ministry would be mobilised to monitor the price of goods at markets nationwide. Ismail also reminded traders holding Aidilfitri cheap sales that they are compelled to list the original and new price of items.
He said the items on sale should comprise at least 70 percent of goods in the premises. This followed implementation of stricter cheap sale price regulations to prevent unscrupulous traders from cheating consumers. The Trade Descriptions Act 1972 provides for fine not more RM100,000 or jail three years' or both for individuals and fine RM250,000 or jail three years' or both for companies. -- Bernama
